Coliform bacteria

A type of bacteria that is coil- or helix- shaped. Fecal Coliform bacteria are those Coliform bacteria that are found in the intestinal tracts of mammals. The presence of high numbers of fecal Coliform bacteria is an indicator of pollution and of potentially dangerous bacterial contamination. High numbers of fecal Coliform bacteria therefore limit beneficial uses such as swimming and shellfish harvesting.
